The life and work of the church is intended by God to be thoroughly supernatural. God does not intend for the church to run by mere human effort. He expects the church to be built up by the grace gifts that he gives us as a display of his Spirit. The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “Pursue love and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts...” (1 Corinthians 14:1). That phrase is a strong imperative. Whatever we do in this church is intended by God to be done in the power of the Spirit so that the Spirit will be seen among us and the world will take notice.
